about

The phrase “supposed to” can be so toxic and restraining, and this song digs at the idea that we’re all just people. All the structures and systems we’ve set up don’t actually matter—all we’ve got are ourselves and each other. The scaffolding is all fake, and living unconventionally and imperfectly is what makes us human.

lyrics

You’re up without a harness
You’re not wearing anything at all
While I’m chained to an idea
Of how we’re supposed to be
Biological scaffolding passed down
From generations so we don’t fall
You showed me the way out
You even lent me your key

But I know, I know there is no blueprint
No set of rules to live our life
But sometimes it feels like we’re free climbing
And some days I’m scared of the heights
Some days I’m alright

On the rocks without a rope
You can go wherever you want
I used to tie myself in knots
Silly thoughts about how things are done
But when you set me free
Did you ever feel like you were caught?
Are you slowing down for me
Or am I just learning to keep up?

But I know, I know there is no blueprint
No set of rules to live our life
But sometimes it feels like we’re free climbing
And some days I’m scared of the heights
Some days…
Some days I’m alright
