It was what you wanted
Now it’s what I need
Are we together or not
I’m feeling stuck in between
At first I really fought it
I like having you around
But soon enough I spotted
This one-way street downtown
And it’s hard and it’s hardly the end of the road
But I can’t let go just yet
And you know it, I’ve told you, it’s bold of you
To ask me to stay attached
It’s just favors for favors
And a spiderweb of strings
Do you only want a man
Who’s gonna get you everything?
Some cheap entertainment
For the price of honesty
And up till now that wasn’t a hard sell to me
I put my phone on silent
And try and cut out the noise
Remembering in the quiet
The things I used to enjoy
But putting up boundaries seems to make it worse
Wrapped around your finger till blood vessels burst
And it hurts to feel
Like all I do is annoy you
And it’s hard and it’s hardly the end of the road
But I can’t let go just yet
And you know it, I’ve told you, it’s bold of you
To ask me to stay attached
It’s just favors for favors
And a spiderweb of strings
Do you only want a man
Who’s gonna get you everything?
Some cheap entertainment
For the price of honesty
And up till now that wasn’t a hard sell to me
It was what you wanted
And now it’s what I need
I used to come when you called
I used to follow your lead
You said you felt too exhausted
That you wanted to be free
It was what you wanted
Now it’s what I need

People gathered in their Sunday loungewear
Thrifted crewnecks, slip-on shoes
Bleary-eyed bedheads sipping the news
Hot or iced? Bitter or spiced?
How ‘bout a slice of Norma’s pie?
It’s nice with the windows shut
Fog up the glass with steamy cups
And it always smells like fall here
Must be something in the air
Maybe it’s the lights that bring out the right atmosphere
Cuz nothing could be finer
Than an afternoon at the RR Diner
So slide on into a booth,
If you’ve got a dime you can play the jukebox
You can hear the regulars catching up
Somebody’s car needs a jump
Bobby dropped by just to say hi to Shelly on her break
He found her at the end of the counter
But it’s just an excuse to be around her
And it always smells like fall here
Must be something in the air
Maybe it’s the lights that bring out the right atmosphere
Cuz nothing could be finer
Than an afternoon at the RR Diner
She had 125 freckles in the pleasant summer
But in the rain…
